As you might already have seen, Dynamic Stew has been making some big splashes in the scene of funk. With some pretty big shows coming up coupled with the recent release of their self-titled album, the Stew has been serving some real good funky jams.
Their live shows are always pretty amped and their sound isn’t so much unique, rather it is that typical funk-with-horns, strong rhythm section and some ripping guitar. The vocals meld nicely into the music and the keys are key! The energy level is high and if this band doesn’t get you dancing, nothing will. The band is tight and is showing signs of real promise. This can easily been heard from their CD.
Offering only 5 songs, Johnny’s Lament might be my favorite because of the catchy lyrics. The CD is a great representation of a live show but has the sound quality of a studio album. This is juxtaposed nicely with the last song which is a live track where they start off with The Meter’s Cissy’s Strut and then end with Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. And between these two classics is their own Stick Figure Shuffle. The live track is great. It really confirms the talent of the band because after listening to the CD you might ask, “Can they really do this live?” Without doubt, your concerns are put to rest while you jive to the funk.
The CD is their first release, as far as I know. I expect that there will be a full length CD soon. The CD passes by quickly so I’m anxious to see more from this band. Be sure to be at The Velvet Lounge this Friday, October 8th for your share of the Stew.
