Here’s the important announcement.

After four years together and over 150 shows, Dynamic Stew will be going on Hiatus. The band got together and agreed that it was best to take a much needed break. This decision will give all members of the band other opportunities. However, it is not out of the question that the band may never play together again. So with this said, we will play our last three shows on

Thanks to everyone who supported Dynamic Stew along the way. We couldn’t have made it this far without all of you. Happy Holidays…

DS was recently featured in Good Times Magazine! Check out what Good Times had to say and make sure you check out our live music archives to sample some stew!!

“The term “jam band” is thrown around a lot these days – usually to describe acts that aren’t usually pigeonholed in a particular style. What style would you call Phish? Or John Hiatt? P-Funk?

Luckily, there’s an act in this region that combines all those styles and a lot more, delivering a rich funk stew with each performance. No wonder the members of this particular band chose to call the act Dynamic Stew, because that’s exactly what this funkified live act delivers with each performance.”

They’re also an extremely busy unit, with constant area performances as well as many recently at the hot New York City club Coda, where they are garnering a healthy and loyal following. In fact, the band’s website features three listenable MP3 versions of their songs – “Strong Pimp Hand,” “Red Clay,” and “My Lady” – that were recorded at the hot Big Apple night spot.

Of course, it takes a lot of hard work to be able to perform at such a top venue, and that’s exactly what Dynamic Stew has put in for the past three years. In April 2003, Ray Holman (drums and vocals) and Ryan Duffy’s (guitar and vocals) creation, Dynamic Stew, took flight. By combining the talents of Matt Fox (bass), Mike Schieferstein (tenor and soprano saxophone), Jamey Zebrack (keyboards), and Geno Licata (percussion), Dynamic Stew has been hammering the music scene with a forceful grit ever since.

<!--The members of the hot band hail from the Farmingdale area. They perform their music with vigorous ambition, surging their high-energy funk into the audience from start to finish. This innovative sound is a result of the band’s unique songwriting – unlike about 99.98 percent of local bands, the Stew concentrates on original music – and the many influences they incorporate into their sound. Each member adds his own creative styles of funk, fusion, jazz, and skillful arrangements to produce the tightly woven groove that is heard on stage.

Despite their short existence, Dynamic Stew has already surpassed many of their original aspirations. The band has shared the same bill with many national acts including members of Parliament/Funkadelic, The Meters, Grateful Dead, Vida Blue, Deep Banana Blackout, Max Creek, and Colonel Bruce. The band also experienced a breakthrough summer in 2005 by appearing at numerous music festivals throughout the northeast.

Dynamic Stew values the relationship they have built with their audience, and this can best be seen onstage. The band’s top priority is to continuously introduce fresh, new material while creating variations of their existing songs. Each performance is packed with enough intensified funk to keep fans old and new coming back for more.–>

The band is also in the midst of preparing a new recording, their first in about two years. Holman reported they’ll be working at the famed Chung King Studios in New York City.

“We’re already doing some recording for our new recording,” Holman said. “We’re actually shaving some time off some of our songs, since ours tend to be longer than a lot of the bands out there.”

Long songs bring to mind the term “jam band,” which isn’t a term that Holman agrees with when defining Dynamic Stew – but they believe the jam band community is one of the most vibrant music scene in existence today.

“We like to be known more as a funk band,” Holman said. “But the jam band scene is a great community with great people. We do jam, but we structure ourselves a little bit more than that. It’s not all 20-minute solos and endless songs.”

With such an original sound, Holman admits forging a name for Dynamic Stew’s unique, wholly different style is hard in a place such as Long Island, home of scads of tribute and cover acts. The band seems to be up for the challenge.

“Sure, we agree it’s not easy in Long Island to a point,” said Holman, “and we know we kind of stick out like a sore thumb. If people go out and want to hear their favorite Bruce Springsteen songs played by a local band, that’s great. But there are places to perform, like the Velvet Lounge, which is just fantastic – great music by great bands almost every night. And we do try to get off the Island as much as possible. New York City, thought, is a great scene with great bands everywhere.” No doubt, music fans all over the metro area will be referring to Dynamic Stew as “great” much more in the months to come.

Dynamic Stew will appear at The Velvet Lounge in East Setauket on Saturday, September 16. Their self-titled debut album is available on their website. For more information on this hot band, log on to dynamicstew.com.
